For a great family day out, discover Southampton’s most important historic house and lovely garden in the delightful setting of Southampton’s Old Town. The house dates back to the 1400s, and tells the fascinating history of the characters that once lived there. It is home to a range of interesting artefacts, giving the visitor a fascinating insight into life through the ages. These include objects as varied as a case of Victorian stuffed birds, a pair of 1920s shoes, and a medieval jewel casket. Look out for the Penny Farthing, dating back from the late 19th Century. On the first floor, also known as the Trade Room you can see the recently discovered significant collection of late 16th Р early 17th Century graffiti. This fascinating rare graffiti includes many different images of ships and people, sketches of animals and symbols and other shapes. There are lots of interesting interactive activities for children. Outside, visitors can enjoy the Tudor knot garden with formal pathways and low hedges and plenty of places to explore. You can take refuge in a real WW2 air raid shelter and uncover the story of King John’s Palace. At this interesting attraction the activities and interactive exhibits are designed to capture the imagination of the whole family. For young children (aged 1-4 years) there are also family-friendly resources in the Discovery Room. Look out for fun events for children which are held throughout the year.
