Explosion, the Museum of Naval Firepower is an award-winning, family friendly museum of naval warfare, situated within 18th century buildings at the Royal Navy’s former armaments depot of Priddy’s Hard in Gosport. These buildings sit on the edge of a delightful camber basin on the western shore of Portsmouth Harbour, with views across to Portchester Castle, Whale Island and the Naval Base. This fascinating museum is home to a unique collection of cannon, big guns, mines, torpedoes, missiles and the nuclear bomb. Children can discover the amazing listed Grand Magazine, the vast gunpowder vault that stored up to 6000 barrels of powder, walk through an underwater sea bed filled with mines, experience a moving gun deck and tackle the mouse hunt trail, where several mice have invaded the site and are hiding around the Museum. Can you find Gunslinger Mouse or Cooper Mouse? Children can also become a pirate or naval officer in the dressing up challenge. Visitors to the Museum can play several traditional board games, with a big difference. Each of the games are in giant scale; and you can even become the counters! Games include Snakes and Ladders, Ludo and Jamenga and they all come complete with giant dice. Families can arrive in style on board the Waterbus Service, linking Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower and Royal Navy Submarine Museum. There is also a lively calendar of events, with family friendly activities throughout the year.
