Handa Island

Visit Handa Island Wildlife Reserve with the family for a fun-filled day trip. A fantastic nature reserve which opened to visitors in 1961, Handa boasts wonderful coastal views and an array of birdlife. It is internationally renowned for its seabirds, in particular its Arctic skuas which can be seen from April-September. Children should also look out for puffins, oystercatchers and even otters. On top of the excellent wildlife, Handa is a great place to engage the family with all sorts of aspects of the natural world, from geology and coasts to wildflowers and archaeology. A ferry service runs during the visitor season (March-August) and it is good idea to ring in advance before taking the family if you are travelling from a long distance.
