If you are visiting London with the family, then make sure you leave plenty of time to explore the fascinating Churchill War Rooms, the Cabinet War Rooms and Second World War bunker, and the Churchill Museum, the biographical museum about the life of Winston Churchill. The basement of a building in Whitehall was selected as the site for the Cabinet War Rooms and between 1940-45, these rooms became the covert headquarters protecting staff and secrets at the core of the British Government.
These underground rooms reveal much about Churchill as a prime minister and his legacy and about leadership and decision-making and how people’s lives in Britain were impacted and affected by the war. Glimpse inside the actual Map Room where Churchill led, containing maps, furniture and telephones and other artefacts. This has been preserved exactly as it was left back in 1945. A host of records and documents of Winston Churchill, including the originals of many of his famous speeches, can be seen here.
It is also possible to listen to extracts from his wartime speeches and see letters he wrote to his adored wife Clementine. This is a great destination for school parties and anyone interested in history and politics. Private tours of the War Rooms can be arranged and be sure not to miss the interesting family events held during the year.
