Have a day out with the children in Worcestershire at Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings near Bromsgrove. This fascinating museum opened to the public in 1967 after a medieval town house in Bromsgrove town centre was rescued and reconstructed. Since then Avoncroft has continued to rescue historic buildings that cannot be retained in their original locations.
Visitors to the museum can now view over 30 rescued structures that were threatened with demolition or neglect. So families will find plenty to interest the kids including a windmill, perry mill, Anderson shelter, 1946 prefab house, and the National Telephone Kiosk Collection.
In addition there is a collection of objects relating to the purpose of the buildings. For instance, you may discover anything from small domestic items to agricultural equipment and wagons. The Medieval Town House, Toll House and 1950s Arcon V Prefab have gardens planted in keeping with the period they represent.
Within the 19 acres of grounds is a cider and perry orchard stocked with heritage varieties. Stop for a few moments by the wildlife pond which is home to birds, insects and more. What will you spot?
On certain dates the Bromsgrove Society of Model Engineers operates its model trains on the site – always a hit with the kids! There is a year-round programme of special events and activities for families, especially over Bank Holidays and during local school holidays.
