One of the interesting places to go in Oxfordshire with the kids is Stonor Park near Henley-on-Thames. This is a family day out with something for all ages, from toddlers to grandparents.
Stonor Park is one of the oldest family residences in the UK with generations of the Stonor family living there over the last 850 years. The historic building, with its 250 acres of sweeping grounds and beautiful gardens, was constructed on the site of an ancient stone circle, which dates to the late Neolithic age.
Not only does Stonor offer the chance to escape into the great outdoors, with its parklands, nature walks and cycling trails, but the house is full of history. Highlights include the Gothic revival hall, 12th-century chapel and dramatic long gallery, as well as the library which provides an overview of the 29 generations of Stonors who have lived at the great house. Learn about Cecily Stonor, who was imprisoned in the Tower of London for hiding the priest St Edmond Campion during the Reformation.
Allow plenty of time for the fantastic adventure playground at Tumblestone Hollow. Children aged 4 to 12 years will have a great time exploring the high-level walkways, look-out decks, climbing nets, the gnarled central tower and bridges! There are picnic tables and benches plus snacks available nearby.
Special events include Medieval Jousting, the Henley County Show and the Antiques and Vintage Car Boot Fair, as well as seasonal trails in the gardens and Tumblestone Hollow for Easter and Halloween.
