The Sill: National Landscape Discovery Centre is named after the famous volcanic geological feature – The Whin Sill, upon which the Emperor Hadrian built his Wall in AD122. It is an amazing new visitor attraction funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in partnership with Northumberland National Park and YHA England and Wales. The beautiful building and UNESCO World Heritage Site has facilities offering a year-round programme of events to inspire you to explore the landscapes, history and heritage of Northumberland.
The most striking feature is its walk-on grass roof and viewing platform overlooking Hadrian’s Wall and surrounding countryside. Alternatively, you can view amazing vistas from the comfort of the Café specialising in local food. Afterwards you can walk around an interesting interactive exhibition that will help explain how the countryside has changed over thousands of years and is still changing to meet current needs.
