Get the whole family out into the fresh air on a family walk at Downs Bank, an open space of heath and woodlands near Stone in Staffordshire. A large part of this interesting landscape is grazed by a small herd of friendly cattle from spring to autumn.
Make your way up to the rock pillar at the highest point on the Downs and enjoy the extensive views. Will you be lucky enough to glimpse the bright blue flash of a kingfisher beside Downs Banks Brook, which runs the length of the site? Families with older children may enjoy the Edges walk following a 4km route and taking about an hour and a half. There are plenty of paths and tracks for shorter rambles with younger children.
Please see the National Trust’s website for up-to-date information and to download walks before your visit.
