For a castle that has lived through more than 800 years of service, including resisting a siege by the French and seeing off the Spanish Armada, Carisbrooke Castle is wonderfully well preserved.
At the heart of the island’s history, Carisbrooke is where King Charles I was imprisoned. Can you find the rooms from where he tried to escape? Or have a go on the bowling green, which was used by the defeated king.
There are all the ingredients here for a great value family day out on the Isle of Wight! Children will love dressing up as Norman soldiers or Civil War troopers and meeting the castle’s famous donkeys who have been drawing up water in the well-house for hundreds of years.
Climb the steep steps up the castle mound to enjoy unrivalled views from the ancient castle keep. See the presentation in the 16th century guardhouse or there is Carisbrooke Castle Museum, full of Charles I memorabilia. You can also experience the beauty and tranquillity of St Nicholas’ chapel.
The Edwardian style Princess Beatrice Garden has charming period planting, water features and an orchard. The tearoom serves a selection of locally produced hot and cold food; or pack a picnic basket and make use of the picnic tables or the good sized lawns.
This fascinating attraction offers a great day out that all the family will enjoy.
