Happy New Year!

And Happy Chinese New Year on the 29th of January!

It is believed that what you do at the beginning of a new year will affect your luck in the coming year. Staying up on Chinese New Year’s eve (January 29th, 2025) and saying good words to your family/friends like Happy New Year after the clock strikes 12 will certainly bring good luck.

Giving out red packets to children and elders will help cast away the bad luck (demon Nian) and bring good luck in.

The Lantern Festival also called Shangyuan Festival  and Cap Go Meh, is a Chinese traditional festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar Chinese calendar, during the full moon.

Children go out at night carrying paper lanterns and solve riddles on the lanterns they find.  In ancient times, the lanterns were fairly simple, and only the emperor and noblemen had large ornate lanterns.

In modern times, lanterns have been embellished with many complex designs. For example, lanterns are now often made in the shape of animals. The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones, which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune.

This is the year of the Wood Snake.

The Snake represents wisdom, knowledge, intelligence, intuition and creativity. Snakes are also associated with good luck, prosperity, fertility and longevity. In some legends, snakes are considered divine messengers and guardians of sacred places. Snakes are also revered for their ability to shed their skin and renew themselves, symbolising transformation and rebirth and growth, stability, and creativity.
