One of the popular places to go with kids in the West Midlands is Thinktank, Birmingham’s Science Museum. Both fun and educational, this award-winning venue is the place where science and discovery come alive with the help of over 200 displays housed over four floors.
Visit Thinktank Planetarium for a variety of shows about space and astronomy; tour the night sky and journey to the very edge of the universe (a small extra charge applies per person per show).
See specimens from the fields of zoology, botany, entomology, geology and more in the Natural Sciences collection. Find yourself face to face with the Thinktank Ichthyosaur in the Marine World’s Gallery and look into how creatures such as penguins, walrus and prehistoric crocodiles have adapted to life in the oceans.
Head for new gallery MiniBrum, designed especially for families with under 8s – it’s Thinktank’s own tiny city where children are in charge. Meanwhile, The Things About Me Gallery offers the chance to learn how our bodies work. The Wild Life Gallery is the place to discover the range of habitats and diversity of life on our planet. The Street Gallery illustrates how science and technology underpins our daily lives, such as efficient ways to recycle rubbish.
Step back to the past in the Move It Gallery and Power Up Gallery. Explore the vehicles and huge working engines that contributed to the city’s importance during the Industrial Revolution. Do you know about Birmingham’s links to the Spitfire? The Science & Industry Collection offers the chance to learn about 250 years of technological development and achievement.
Look ahead to the future as you explore outer space and find out about innovative inventions, medical advancements and scientists’ predictions. One of the highlights in the Futures Gallery is interactive exhibit Create an Alien!
Get hands-on with the exciting interactive exhibits in ’We Made It’ and understand how and why Birmingham was considered the ’Workshop of the World’.
Make the most of your visit by picking up one of the family trails that are available or ask about borrowing an activity pack at the Ticket Desk. There are hands-on activities at weekends and school holidays such as object handling, arts activities, science busking and science demos.
The whole family will have fun outside in the Science Garden with 30 hands-on exhibits demonstrating the principles of mechanics, engineering and transportation. Don’t miss your chance to have a go in the human-sized hamster wheel! Part of the Eastside City Park, the Science Garden is free to enter every day from 3pm, closing times vary throughout the year. The Kids’ Park alongside invites little ones to learn more about the science behind sound, touch and movement.
Please see Thinktank’s website to confirm details before travelling.
