There are only three Norman castles on this scale remaining in England and so a family day out at Rockingham Castle near Market Harborough is a must for families who are interested in history.
Visitors to the Castle will immediately understand why William the Conqueror ordered a Castle to be built here, its magnificent views across the Welland Valley are unsurpassed. As well as a fortress the Castle was an important seat of government, the Great Council of Rockingham being held here in 1095.
Take the tour of the castle or wander through the fine rooms at your own pace, children can take the Eye Spy quiz to keep their attention sharp, learn about the Castle and have fun. There are large formal and informal gardens and plenty of open spaces for children to play in.
There are ticket options available and a garden ticket includes Salvins Tower, children under 4 years have free entry. Look out for the events held throughout the year.
