As one of the UK’s largest horse sanctuaries, Redwings is responsible for over 2,000 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules and funded solely by donations. Each horse has its own story to tell and 150 abandoned, mistreated and neglected horses, ponies, donkeys and mules are rescued by Redwings every year. At Redwings Horse Sanctuaries, the belief is that every horse, pony, donkey and mule has the right to a happy and healthy life, free of fear and neglect.
Families can have a wonderful day out at Redwings Ada Cole in Essex, which is situated on the B181, near Nazeing. It is home to around 70 horses, ponies and donkeys, including Teeny Tucker, one of the cutest and cuddliest Shetlands and the tiniest resident! There is also the very handsome Gelderlander Zippy, cheeky donkey Del Boy, a lovely Shetland pony called Tinkerbell and a rock ‘n’ roll pony called Elvis!
Visitors can enjoy walking tours and horse care demonstrations, followed by hot drinks and tasty bakes from the Nosebag Cafe. Or families can pack a picnic basket and enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors. There is also an on-site gift shop offering a range of souvenirs, all proceeds from which go to support the hundreds of equines in the charity’s care. Choose from Redwings’ puzzles, Redwings’ note cards and much more, including lovely soft cuddly toys of some of Redwings’ pony stars!
Families can sponsor a horse or donkey for £15 and receive a wonderful A5 photo of their new friend, discover their rescue story and receive a special certificate. Adoptees can also visit them for free and even get an invite to their birthday party!
Redwings Ada Cole is open all year round, every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10am to 4pm (closed Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays). Remember entry is free, donations are much appreciated and dogs on leads are welcome at all of Redwings’ visitor centres too!
