A really lovely place to take the kids for a free day out is this interesting gallery on the banks of the River Thames. Orleans House was a Palladian villa built by the architect John James in 1710 near the Thames at Twickenham and is a lovely setting for a free day out.
Set in woodland gardens, there are galleries and temporary exhibitions. Boat trips depart from the nearby quay.
