Dunster Castle and Watermill details...

Have a great day out with the family at Dunster Castle in West Somerset. There has been a castle in this location since at least Norman times and the impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower are testament to its turbulent history and past.

The castle that visitors are able to enjoy today turned from being a medieval stronghold into a comfortable and luxurious country home for the Luttrell family, who lived here for some 600 years until the 1970s. Formerly the centrepiece of a grand estate, the majority of Dunster Castle had to be sold in the 1950s to cover the extensive death duties it incurred. Collections include paintings, silver, furniture and porcelain and a leather hanging that tells the love story of Antony and Cleopatra.

There are lots of things for families to enjoy, including the working Victorian watermill, attic and basement tours, guided subtropical garden tours and children’s trails, as well as tree climbing and sheepdog and falconry displays. Be sure to go on the free family trail and learn about a secret passageway in the King Charles room and 17th century coins.

The events programme includes many family-friendly activities and events through the year, such as Civil War weekends, archery sessions and Wild Wednesdays, so check out the website to find out when these are scheduled.

Please see the National Trust’s website to find out more.
