Arundel Castle details...

For a wonderful day out that all the family will enjoy, spend time at the delightful Arundel Castle in West Sussex, family home of the Duke of Norfolk. There are nearly 1,000 years of history at this great castle, which is situated in magnificent grounds overlooking the River Arun.

It was built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel and has a fascinating history. The oldest feature of the castle is the motte, an artificial mound, over 100 feet high from the dry moat, and constructed in 1068. Castle Visits are at your own pace and there are guides in most rooms during normal opening hours.

There are wonderful sights of Heraldic glass in the gallery, a collection of historic weaponry in the Armoury and the Library has one of the finest Regency interiors in the world. Climb up the grand staircase to discover the Castle Bedrooms and the Victorian bathrooms! Outside you can wander in the tranquil grounds.

Peep into the 14th century Fitzalan Chapel and its nearby White Garden, discover the Organic Kitchen Garden, the beautiful Cut Flower Garden and The Collector Earl’s Garden. Don’t forget to have a look at the glass houses, one filled with amazing tropical flowers and the other, The Vine House, which is full of exotic fruit and vegetables!

Are you able to climb up the 131 steps to the Keep? If you can, you will be rewarded with wonderful views of the Downs, the River Arun, the town of Arundel and on to the sea. Arundel Castle has a large variety of events on throughout its opening period.

Look out for exciting Living History Group re-enactments, with fierce battles and jousting tournaments, together with story-tellers and falconry displays. There are also opportunities to have a go at Archery, suitable for the over 8’s.  Don’t miss the Living History Days, or the Pirates and Smugglers Days! Arundel Castle also has a gift shop, as well as a restaurant and a coffee shop for when it’s time to rest those weary legs.
