Almost an Edinburgh institution, Alien Rock, (Now known as Alien 1) was Scotland’s first dedicated indoor climbing centre which opened its doors in 1994, and has provided a fun, friendly and exciting destination for indoor climbers ever since. Alien 1 provides a large and varied selection of roped climbing across a variety of surfaces, from easy slab, to overhanging roof and everything in between. Top-rope, leading and bouldering are all available. Routes are changed around every four months, to keep everything entertaining and challenging, giving around 200 different climbs from which to choose. Drinks and snacks are available in reception along with climbing accessories in the Tiso shop,
A second indoor venue (Alien 2) was opened nearby in 2001 and is primarily a bouldering centre with lower walls, on which ropes are not used. There are over 300m2 of walls at various angles spread across easier slabs up to a large 8 metre- long roof, presenting a vast range of challenges for both beginners and more experienced climbers alike. The handholds on the walls are a mixture of moulded and bolt-on features, the bolt-on handholds are regularly removed, cleaned and replaced to provide an ever- changing variety of courses and challenges. As a precaution, the floor is covered in deep foam filled matting to provide a soft landing, just in case your climb does not go according to plan!
The two Alien Rock sites together provide Indoor climbing which is suitable for nearly all ages and abilities whether they are complete novices or experienced climbers and are happy to welcome those who visit individually or as part of a group. Unusually for Edinburgh there is ample, free parking at both sites too.
