Train, Boat and Crane Trips 2024 at M Shed details...

Open 20 Apr - 27 Oct

One of the truly family-friendly places to visit with kids in Bristol, M Shed is home to a variety of large, outside exhibits. Visitors can see these exhibits during normal opening hours. On certain dates during spring, summer and autumn visitors can see one or more of them in action and even ride on them. It is likely to be one of the highlights of the day out for young visitors.

Train rides

Treat the family to a 15-minute steam train ride on Bristol Harbour Railway, which dates from the 1870s. The railway runs from M Shed to the SS Great Britain along the quayside.

Crane visits

A 20-minute trip inside the electric cranes and the Fairbairn steam crane is sure to be a hit with kids. A minimum height limit of one metre applies. Watch these landmarks at work and discover their important role in working life on the dockside.

Boat trips

Take in the views of the harbour during a half-hour trip on board the John King, a diesel tug which towed cargo ships to the mouth of the Avon from Bristol City Docks. She also transported drinking water to ships in dry dock and even on occasion pulled vessels that had grounded back into deeper water.

Please see M Shed’s website for operating dates and to confirm prices and other details.

All trips are subject to availability and it is advisable to avoid disappointment by phoning 0117 352 6600 in advance.
