Calan Gaeaf - October Half Term at Powis Castle

Take the kids to follow the family-friendly trail of pumpkins through the gardens on a day out at Powis Castle in Mid Wales and learn more about a Welsh folklore tradition.

Traditionally Calan Gaeaf marks the start of winter in the Welsh calendar and communities would gather for seasonal customs. When the evening finished children would race home lest a tail-less black sow, the Hwch Ddu Gwta, might catch them.

Follow the trail at Powis and see whether you can find the Hwch Ddu Gwta’s den. Snuffling noises and squealing may help you. Along the route through the garden there are ten Hwch Ddu Gwta lurking, ready to pursue visitors! Can you find them all?
