Free NW Hidden Gems

If you’re planning family days out and trying to keep things simple, low-cost, and genuinely fun, the Northwest quietly delivers some brilliant surprises. Forget expensive attractions for a minute, this is your reminder that some of the best adventures are completely free, often tucked away just out of sight.

Here are our favourite hidden gems to explore with children,  the kind of places where they can run, climb, discover, and burn energy without you constantly checking your wallet.

Fletcher Moss Park and Botanical Gardens in Manchester

This one feels like stepping into a secret garden tucked behind the city. You get winding woodland paths, little stepping-stone adventures, and river edges that kids can safely explore. It’s compact enough not to overwhelm little legs but varied enough to feel like a proper “discovery walk”.

Haigh Woodland Park in Manchester

A proper crowd-pleaser for families. Think big open woodland, rope bridges, trails, and one of the best free adventure playgrounds around. It’s the kind of place where “we’ll stay for an hour” quietly turns into a full afternoon.

Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden in Cheshire

Have a relaxing stroll around the lovely landscaped gardens on a warm afternoon with the children. Admire the borders at different times of the year and look out for wildlife around the deep ponds. A treat in the tea rooms completes a perfect day out with the kids.

Mere Sands in Lancashire

Quiet, peaceful, and a bit magical. This is one of those places that feels like it shouldn’t be so close to civilisation. Expect woodland trails, lakes, and plenty of chances to spot wildlife if you slow down and look.

Castlefield Urban Heritage Park in Manchester

This is where history meets canals. Kids love the bridges, the locks, and watching boats move through the waterways. It’s also a great “walk and snack” kind of place – lots to see without breaking the bank.

Liverpool Waterfront in Liverpool

Not just a view – this is open space, sculptures, ferries, and plenty of movement. The famous waterfront stretch is perfect for wandering, people-watching, and spotting landmarks along the river.

Sand dunes, pinewoods, and big open beaches make this feel like a proper mini adventure. It’s ideal for running, climbing dunes, and building sand kingdoms – with the bonus chance of spotting red squirrels nearby.

Morecambe Promenade in Morecambe

Classic seaside energy with open skies and big bay views. There’s space to run, spots to stop for ice cream, and the iconic statues along the promenade that kids always seem drawn to.
