Choose Llanelli Wetland Centre for a great kids day out in South Wales. Don’t forget to buy a bag of grain to feed the birds before you set off to discover the incredible variety of wildlife on the 450-acre reserve with its range of habitats.
Feeding the ducks and the amazingly greedy geese will keep the kids entertained for ages! When the grain’s run out, head for the viewing tower to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the marsh, watch the colourful Caribbean flamingos and visit the hides.
As well as the year-round members of the centre’s world wildfowl collection and seasonal flocks of wild birds, the reserve is home to a host of different plants, animals and insects such as butterflies and dragonflies.
Allow plenty of time for the kids to let off steam on the traditional play area, find their way through the Swan’s Nest Maze and crawl through the winding tunnels of Water Vole City.
At weekends and during school holidays there are usually extra activities such as pond dipping, minibeast hunts, craft workshops and den building. Just check the information board on arrival to find out what’s on so you don’t miss anything.
There are also regular seasonal events and activities for children. Look out for Downy Duckling Week over Whitsun half term when visitors are invited to go behind the scenes in the duckling nursery; hugely popular, these tours need to be booked early.
Over the summer, families can take a self-guided canoe safari through the Millennium Wetlands or explore on two wheels along bike trails (bikes available onsite). Minimum age for the canoe safari is 5 years.
Whatever the season, there will be something of interest.
