Whitby Abbey details...

This spectacular ruin is one of the most atmospheric visitor attractions on the Yorkshire coast. Set on the East headland high over the popular seaside town, Whitby Abbey’s dramatic setting inspired Bram Stoker’s ’Dracula’.

Immerse yourself in 13th-century gothic splendour, and roam the ruins of the abbey church to discover the rich history of the Abbey. This spectacular headland was chosen for the first monastery on the site by King Oswy of Northumbria in AD657. It became one of the most important religious centres in the Anglo-Saxon world under the charge of the formidable Abbess Hild.

Delve into the daily life of the monks who once lived here in the unique interactive visitor centre housed behind the classical frontage of the Cholmley family mansion. The mansion was built after Henry VIII’s suppression of the abbey in 1539. Take the audio tour around the ancient ruins and appreciate the staggering views of the coastal position. Get to know  people from Whitby’s past such as Abbess Hild, a monk and Bram Stoker through entertaining and interactive touchscreens.

Set yourself a challenge to climb the 199 steps from the harbour town of Whitby and set out your family picnic in the extensive grounds surrounding the abbey.

You can enjoy family focused events including re-enactments and Dracula themed events. Family tickets are for 2 adults and 3 children and under 5s have free entry.
