Find out more about Cornwall’s rich China Clay heritage in the indoor, interactive displays, which tell the story of the men, women and children who lived, worked and played in the shadow of the china clay tips.

See Cornwall’s largest working water wheel, the fully preserved Victorian china clay works, machinery and equipment exhibitions and the Vintage commercial vehicles and locomotive.

There are children’s activity sheets and changing exhibitions. Everyone can enjoy exploring the acres of nature trails and woodland walks, teeming with wild flowers, birds and aquatic life.

There is also a fun children’s woodland play area and a cycle or walking trail to St Austell and the Eden Project for the more adventurous members of the family.

Wheal Martyn has won awards and is an area centre for the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, situated between Luxulyn valley and Charlestown. After exploring the sights and sounds of this fascinating attraction, families can pay a visit to the Cafe, which uses the finest local ingredients. Or pack a picnic basket before you leave home and enjoy your meal in the grounds.

Visitors to the site are guided by marked trails, either following the ’historic’ trail, which explores the historic buildings at the core of the site, or the ’nature’ trail, which cover the rest of the 26 acre site.

The view into the working pit is one of the highlights. You can download a map from the site before your visit.
