Spend a day out at this fascinating attraction which is part of a chain of coastal artillery defences and originally a Tudor Fortress. Walmer Castle then evolved into the homely residence of The Duke of Wellington for 23 years.
In the Wellington Room you can see the armchair in which Wellington died and his campaign bed! The room has recently been refurbished and you can see how the room would have looked when he lived there.
Explore Walmer Re-imagined with its wonderful displays which were created to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. You can explore the castle with a multimedia guide, and hear previously untold stories of the castle and its residents.
Outside there are lovely gardens, including The Queen Mother’s Garden. Here you can go on the woodland walk, see the Oval Lawn, take time to read a book, or play with the giant garden games in the summer.
You can also see what’s happening in the kitchen garden, which has grown produce for the castle for nearly 300 years! Step inside the greenhouses bursting with colour in all seasons. Nearby the moat garden also provides a great safe space for children to explore.
