Explore the fascinating story of the Royal Air Force and the people who serve through a unique collection – ranging from bi-planes to fast jets, logbooks to lucky charms – in four vast display hangars.
Start your journey with the Knights of the Air from the First World War. Take a step back in time in our Battle of Britain display, featuring a Hurricane and Boulton Paul Defiant, built in the West Midlands, alongside the oldest surviving Spitfire. Share the stories of the people who helped win the Battle in the air and on the ground, through their flying jackets, medal bars and objects from the vital plotting rooms.
Featuring the newly restored Wellington bomber, Guy Gibson’s Victoria Cross, and the Bristol Blenheim, discover how the RAF’s Bomber Command took the war to the enemy. New interactive displays share the wider Bomber Command story, exploring stories of the crew, technology and raids that were crucial to Allied victory in the Second World War.
The National Cold War Exhibition is the only place in the world to see the three V-Bombers – the Vulcan, Victor and Valiant – together. Audio-visual Hotspots share the stories of the Space Race and Cuban Missile Crisis as well as anti-war protests.
The story is brought up to date with Bravo November, the latest aircraft to join our collection. This recently retired Chinook was the only one to survive the Falklands Conflict and went on to serve for 40 years.
In addition to exploring the hangars, there is plenty on offer at the Museum for younger visitors. The aviation themed playground is a carefully curated blend of fun and education. Featuring a mock control tower, mini hangar and aircraft to climb onboard – it’s perfect for youngsters who dream of becoming pilots. Of course, no playground would be complete without a slide and climbing frame, these features have been incorporated into the bespoke Handley Page Victor, inspired by the real aircraft on display within the Museum.
You’ll find flying entertainment for the whole family in Flight Zone. Experiences on offer include flying with the Red Arrows in an amazing 4D theatre. Pop on your VR goggles and transport yourself into the cockpit of a real Spitfire and take a flight in 360°, or board a Lancaster and experience key events from the Dambusters Raid through Virtual Reality! Don your flying hat and goggles and take a seat in a replica Spitfire cockpit and pose for a selfie! Feel the speed and agility of the Eurofighter Typhoon onboard the Flight Simulator, with a pilot’s eye view from the cockpit. Glide through the skies on the ParadropVR. This immersive paragliding flight combines sensational VR content with a thrilling range of motion, transporting users into a virtual world of airborne adventures.
An exciting events programme runs throughout the year, packed with themed activities for families during each school break.
