Rain or shine, one of the places for a family day out in Warwickshire is the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company. This major visitor attraction includes the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and two other theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon – the intimate Swan Theatre, which shares the front-of-house space, and The Other Place, located nearby.
In addition to wonderful live performances, visitors can expect an exciting programme of exhibitions, tours and free activities throughout the year.
Take the family along to explore the buildings. There is a choice of guided tours available, such as Behind the Scenes Tours, Front of House Tours, From Page to Stage Tours, Family Fun Tours, Tower Visits and more. These tours are a great way to discover both the public and private areas of the theatres and learn more about theatre itself. The 36-metre tower overlooking the River Avon offers fabulous views of all three theatres and the town of Stratford.
Families will find a host of free activities available daily. Young visitors (and their adults!) will have a great time delving into the Dressing Up Cabinet on the ground floor to find special costumes and props. Enjoy a break in one of the cafés while the children keep busy with creative activities from the Play Cart.
Complete with touchy-feely fabrics and simple puzzles, the Story Blanket is ideal for toddlers aged 2-4 years and available from the Information Desk at The Other Place theatre. The whole family can settle down together to enjoy a simple version of Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
Visit an exhibition to gain a fresh perspective on Shakespeare and the Royal Shakespeare Company’s work on stage in the 21st century. Permanent exhibitions include the family-friendly and interactive The Play’s The Thing, a fascinating trip through a century of theatre-making in Stratford. One of the highlights for children of The Play’s The Thing will be the Magic Costume Mirror – your chance to try on a virtual costume and take a photograph!
Why not surprise the family with tickets to a family-friendly performance? Choose from drama including Shakespeare’s plays, family musicals, Christmas shows, comedy and more. Workshops and extra activities for kids run during school holidays.
Charges apply for some activities but there is plenty to enjoy for free.
Please see the Royal Shakespeare Company’s website to confirm times, prices and other details before visiting.
Lockdown is easing further and it is great news that both indoor and outdoor attractions are open to visit once again. We hope you and your children enjoy a wonderful day out after so long. Please check COVID-secure measures set out by the venue before you travel and note any changes to opening times.
The Let’s Go Team is delighted to be back in action inspiring you with ideas.
