For a great day out with the children in South Wales, visit A Welsh Coal Mining Experience, Rhondda Heritage Park, and see the local industrial heritage brought to life. Located at the Merthyr Lewis Colliery, which closed in 1983, this mining museum has lots of family things to do and see.
The highlight for kids and adults alike will be the award-winning Black Gold Experience Underground Tour led by a former miner. The tour includes an exciting ride on the simulated DRAM! back to the surface.
Visit the Exhibition Galleries with interactive displays to find out what the lives of miners, colliery owners and communities were like when coal from the Rhondda powered the world. Outside in the yard area there are original mining artefacts on display such as an Anderson bomb shelter, drams of coal and the Old Forge.
Charges apply for underground tours; Exhibition Galleries are free to visit.
Please see the website of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council to confirm details and book underground tours in advance.
