Get up close to some of the animal wonders of the world across the specially designed habitats; from the savannah to the wetlands and the tropical forest. Come rain or shine Paignton Zoo is a fun filled day out for all the family and you’ll need all day to see it all!
See everything from a tiny leaf-cutter ant to a tall and majestic giraffe! There are lions, gorillas, cheetahs and fascinating crocodiles, plus cheeky Meerkats, colourful snakes and amazing monkeys. Look out for the Capybara, the Bactrian camel, the Gibbons and many more interesting and unusual animals, all in their individual habitats. Explore further and find yourselves in the tranquil woodland of Clennon Gorge Nature Trail. The trail begins near Lemur Wood and is the perfect chance to spot some incredible wildlife. The route is fairly easy and takes around 10 minutes.
Jump on the Jungle Express which will take you past the tiger and lion enclosures, Gorilla Island and Brook Side Aviary. The train runs from Easter to October, weather permitting, and there is a small additional charge. If you’re looking for interactive activities be sure to visit the Discovery Centre where you can build a house for bugs, plant your own herbs and test your senses with help from the Education Interns. Children will love the indoor and outdoor play areas, where they can swing, climb and slide.
Paignton Zoo is also a botanical garden! From waterside plantings to champion trees, herbaceous borders to wild flower meadows, there is something for everyone to enjoy. The indoor growing areas allow the Zoo to grow plants from all over the world, including endangered cactus in the desert house, through to the massive Titan arum, giant bamboo and giant water lilies located in the tropical houses. Paignton Zoo is part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust which co-ordinates seven regional conservation programmes in the UK and overseas.
