Dating from 1582, the castle demonstrates how architecture evolved from the heavily defended tower house to a new more domestic style. Grand enough to play host to James VI it had fallen into disuse within 180 years. Remains are largely intact, save for the roof and fixtures and fittings, so there is plenty left to explore.
