For an ideal family day out in the country, within easy reach of Glasgow and Greenock, head to Finlaystone Country Estate. This family and dog-friendly country estate in the ownership of the current family since 1929, focuses firmly on providing outdoor fun and enjoyment for all ages and abilities. Follow one of the several trails that wander through the 140 acres of woodlands, containing a wide variety of flora, birds and animals, including roe deer, grey squirrels and herons – some of the easier trails are suitable for prams, buggies and smaller children too! There are barbecue points on some of the trails and throughout the estate.
The more ordered gardens cover a further 10 acres of the estate, mainly laid out in 1900 they afford some spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde (The mudflats of which are a Site of Special Scientific Interest). Visit the 70 metre herbaceous border, the Celtic paving, and the “Smelly Garden”, the “Slave’s Paradise, the Knott and Bog gardens and of course the Walled Garden, where you can take refreshments in The Garden Cafe. The Café offers a range of teas, coffees, hot and cold snacks, fresh healthy meals and home baking.
Finlaystone also offers a very large play area, built as far as possible from locally sourced materials, on offer are a pirate ship, tram and Hummer and an area in the woods especially for those under six. For convenience there are a few shelters and barbecue areas close to the play areas as well.
The estate is manned by an enthusiastic group of rangers, who are on hand to provide any information, advice or help, should you need it; they also lead a full programme of events across the seasons, such as nature walks, cross country runs and the ever-popular den building days. Check the website for all the latest details.
For those who would like to visit regularly, annual memberships are available and offer substantial savings, including one especially for grandparents and grandchildren.
