Dramatically sited on a craggy hilltop near Llandeilo, Carreg Cennen Castle makes a great family day out in Carmarthenshire. Climb the hill to explore the atmospheric ruins which date from the time of King Edward I’s castle-building, although there is evidence that the Romans and prehistoric peoples occupied the hilltop. The kids will enjoy venturing down into the natural cave under the castle (remember a torch).
Afterwards, follow one of the waymarked walks around the castle. For added interest, look out for farm animals in the farmyard before you start your climb up to the castle.
