Have a great day out with the children and pay a visit to Burwell Museum and Windmill. This is a fascinating rural history museum set among beautifully preserved historic farming buildings, with a 19th century windmill where children can have fun whilst learning how people lived in Burwell, on the edge of the Fens.
There is just so much to do! Children can see the old school and village shop, with interactive 1950s/60s mechanical telephone exchange and a reconstructed cab from a Burwell and District bus. An 18th-century timber-framed barn contains reconstructions of an old Burwell wash room, kitchen, living room and child’s bedroom. There are agricultural displays of historic farm tools and machines, local building materials, plus historic plumbing and carpentry tools.
There is also a Forge and Wheelwright’s Shop, which originally came from Haddenham Museum, including a working forge and hand-operated wheelwright’s lath. It is now used for craft skills workshops and blacksmith demonstrations. Remember to pop in to the authentic local Shepherd’s Hut, complete with its own sheep and the fascinating Nissen Hut containing items from both World Wars, including a serviceman’s bed and locker and a range of uniforms. You will hear contemporary songs and radio broadcasts play in the background and there is a working air-raid siren.
With so much to do and more, children will also have a great time following the trails and exploring the windmill. There are also craft days, holiday activities as well as colouring sheets and trails to download off the website.
Burwell Museum and Windmill is open Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays from 11am to 5pm with last entry at 4pm. Take along a picnic basket to enjoy while children run around and stretch their legs in the open spaces. A wonderful day out for all the family.

Took the family for the first time and had a lovely day. The kids loved going to the top of the mill and also found the old school room really interesting. Will definitely go back.
