Discover a huge 1920s steam engine which once powered over 1,000 Lancashire cotton looms. Established in 1982, the aim of the museum is to maintain a link to the town’s cotton heritage, by preserving and demonstrating the engine which powered so many looms in the mill from 1920 until its closure in 1978.
On Steaming Days, you can see the Roberts engine in operation, running at its original speed. In the weaving shed there are three looms, two of which are in operation.
See if you can work out how the pattern forms when you watch the Jacquarette loom weaving souvenir tea towels which are sold in the shop.
Check the website for the regular steaming days, weaving demonstrations and textile displays. Admission is free on Saturdays and there is a charge of £6 for adults, £3 children, £15 per family on Steaming Days.
