Sheldon Country Park is a good choice for a free kids day out in Birmingham. Old Rectory Farm, at the entrance, demonstrates traditional methods of farming. Picnic, meet livestock and poultry, have fun in the playground, explore the different habitats in the 300-acre park and watch aeroplanes at the neighbouring airport (the designated viewing area is just under a mile away from the farm buildings and can only be reached on foot).
