Oxford Castle and Prison details...

Enjoy a great family day out exploring the 1,000-year history of Oxford Castle & Prison. Step back in time with costumed guided tours and listen to fascinating stories as they are brought to life. Discover the great tales of Empress Matilda, the curse of Rowland Jenkes and the unfortunate fate of Mary Blandy.

Climb the 101 steps of St. George’s Tower to find dramatic views of the dreaming spires; descend into the atmospheric Crypt of St. George’s Chapel which has ties to Arthurian Legend and the University of Oxford and wander the prison corridors, taking a look inside real jail cells where notorious prisoners were once held.

After your guided tour, you can explore the site at your own leisure. Hear the walls talk in the interactive padded cell and enjoy learning more about the site’s history in the exhibition space. Head outside and climb the mound, the remains of the motte and baily castle.

In the summer, Oxford Castle & Prison hosts Knight School, a medieval inspired workshop which trains children to become little warriors. The Oxford Shakespeare Festival is a summer staple of outdoor theatre, whilst Ghost Fest is sure to give you a scare over Halloween. During Christmas all tours are led by lantern light, reminiscent of Victorian England in the winter.

Step inside and do 1,000 years of time in the oldest building of Oxford!

Under 5s are not allowed up the tower. They will need to be supervised by an adult at the base of the tower.
