Living Coasts details...

For an extraordinary day out with the children, experience animals above and below water at one of Torquay’s most exciting all weather attractions, Living Coasts. Go on a journey to many different coasts from around the world and explore the sights, sounds and smells of the animals that live life on the edge. You can mingle with playful penguins, get up close to the charming otters and see sting rays, seals and more, at the UK’s only coastal zoo and aquarium.

Together with the fascinating habitats and creatures, there are games, activities and panoramic underwater viewing areas to observe the various stunning species and learn about marine conservation. Visit Penguin Beach, where some of the seventeen species of penguins will make you smile! Feeding times will allow you a close up view of these amazing characters. Waders Estuary, with its great backdrop, lets you see wading birds foraging in the grass and the shallow waters for insects. At the Mysterious Mangroves look out for the four-eyed fish, venomous sting rays and the archer fish who are expert at shooting down their food with a jet of water from their mouths. There’s lots of fun at the Otter Rapids, where these lovely mammals enjoy their sand pits and their hidden food trail. Auk Cliff’s underwater viewing area is truly unique, with guillemots and tufted puffins looking silvery and sleek as they swim below the water line. Look out for the short puppet show there!

The Children’s Area is designed for younger children to play for a while, so Mums and Dads can enjoy watching the penguins under the water. There are other fun activities at Living Coasts, such as climbing a wall like a limpet, water play at the Jetty, a crawl tank and an area where children can jump around on the interactive floor, clearing the seaweed and litter before the tide comes in!

Open to all, the Living Coasts café is free to enter for non-visitors too, so go along at any time for family friendly local food and drink, with panoramic sea views overlooking Tor Bay. Throughout the year look out for the fun, seasonal events that take place at Living Coasts, where there is always something exciting to see and experience!
