Kirklees Light Railway details...

Kirklees Light Railway is a great attraction to visit on a day out with the kids in West Yorkshire. Located in Huddersfield, the heritage light railway line was part of the Clayton West branch line developed in the late 19th century to serve the local community. Today you can enjoy the scenic ride through the south Pennine foothills on one of five steam engines that will transport you from Clayton West to Shelley Station.

Pack up a family picnic before you climb aboard either Hawk, Owl, Fox, Badger or Katie, often referred to as ‘Yorkshire’s Great Little Steam Trains’ and chug along the 15” narrow gauge rail track to picturesque Shelley Station. The kids can let off their own steam in the outdoor adventure play area and seasonal bouncy castle or you could enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea in the Tea Room. Alternatively make you return journey to enjoy the play areas and facilities at Clayton West where hot and cold snacks are available.

Look out for the regular special events held throughout the year, including exciting ’Day Out With Thomas’ days when you can meet Thomas as well as Percy, Toby and Mavis, and the Fat Controller keeping an eye on things. The kids will love the additional things to do such as face painting, story telling, crafts and helping Thomas’s Driver and the Fat Controller give Thomas a drink of his special Culdee Fell water brought in from Sodor! Look out for events at Easter and Christmas time where all the family can enjoy all the themed activities that make a really memorable family occasion.

The attraction also offers a brilliant children’s birthday party package that includes the train ride, food and party games for up to 20 children with 4 accompanying adult tickets provided free of charge. There is a large free car park at Clayton West and train tickets are ’ride all day with one fare’, which makes your visit a great value family day out.
